Arcanum was platted in 1868. The village was named after Arcanum, Ohio. A post office has been in operation at Arcanum since 1869. Arcanum is located at (40.933171, -84.829453). It lies on the eastern edge of Darke County and is bordered by Miami County to the east and Brown County to the south; all three counties are served by State Route 73 which passes through downtown Arcanum as Main Street before continuing north towards Troy and south towards Greenville via New Paris or west towards Piqua via Bradfordville Road/County Road 25A respectively . According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all land except for a small creek that runs through it from southwest-to-northeast along its southern border with Brown county where it meets up with Deer Creek which flows into Deer Creek Reservoir just outside town limits near South Lebanon OH .
