About Wilmington

The area along the river had been inhabited by various successive cultures of indigenous peoples for thousands of years. At the time of European encounter, historic Native Americans were a regional power center, having conquered a vast territory and converted it to their culture; they were also noted for being hostile towards new European colonists. The ethnic Europeans encountered the Tuscarora people in this area in 1711 at what is now New Bern, North Carolina. In 1718 Governor Charles Eden organized two expeditions against them; one failed but one succeeded and captured some members who became sources of information about their society before later escaping back to their home territory on Parris Island near Beaufort South Carolina . They finally surrendered after colonial troops defeated them in battle in 1713 at Miale River (present-day Lockwood Folly River) on September 22 or 23 during Queen Anne's War (1702–1713).
