About Stanley

It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Stanley was named for Dr. John Stanley, a local physician and postmaster who served in the North Carolina General Assembly from 1841 to 1843. The town was incorporated by an act of the state legislature on March 1, 1907; it had previously been known as "Taylorsville". It became a major center for cotton production after construction of railroads through Gaston County in the late 19th century; these were later used to transport tobacco grown throughout eastern North Carolina until that crop's decline following World War II . In addition to agriculture, Stanley has also developed manufacturing industries based on textile products and furniture making .
