The city is known for its unique and quirky sense of humor. The "New Bernian" way of speaking is distinct from that of nearby Raleigh, Durham, or Chapel Hill; it has been called a drawl or a twang by some residents. New Bern was the site chosen in 1969 for the filming of "The Andy Griffith Show". It continues to be popularly identified as Mayberry R.F.D., though exterior shots were actually filmed in adjacent Rockingham County, North Carolina (the show's setting). Many scenes were also filmed near Moravian Falls and Lake Junaluska in North Carolina's Smoky Mountains region (elevation ). In 2007 CNN/Money and "Entertainment Weekly" rated New Bern No. 13 on their list of the 100 Best Places to Live in America; this was up two places from 2005 when they ranked it 15th best place to live among small towns with populations between 10,000–30,000 people nationwide.
