Boone was founded by European Americans in the 18th century as an outpost settlement. Before the arrival of white settlers, the area was part of Cherokee territory. The Watauga Association (1772–76) and other settlements along what became known as the "Watauga River" were established by pioneers primarily from Virginia and Pennsylvania who had begun arriving in 1771; they were also joined later by immigrants from Maryland, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
