About Watertown

The city was once called "The City of Millionaires" because of the large number of well-to-do men who lived there. It was one of the first cities in the United States to have electric street lights and one of its largest department stores, Wanamaker's, founded by John Wanamaker. In 1832 it became a center for iron manufacturing from Pennsylvania (especially Pittsburgh), as well as an important port on Lake Ontario; later it also became known for steel production and paper making.
