The city is home to the oldest continuously operating entertainment venue in the state, The Chance Theater. The Town of Poughkeepsie ( ) is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. It is located on the east bank of the Hudson River and lies southeast of Albany; it contains part or all of three villages: Poughkeepsie (the county seat), Arlington and Wappingers Falls. As of 2010 census data, its population was 32,736; by 2017 estimates it had risen to 33,846 making it one-third larger than at any time before 2010 due to annexations from neighboring towns such as LaGrangeville and Red Hook which have been dissolved into new developments like Beacon City where many residents work but do not live there yet still pay taxes for those areas that are no longer there except for some local businesses that remain open like gas stations convenience stores etc...
