Nyack is the location of the first commercial telescope in America, built by Henry L. Ellsworth in 1846. It was also home to a number of Hudson River School painters and writers who were drawn to its rustic beauty, including Washington Irving, Herman Melville and Fitz-Greene Halleck (who wrote "Hasty Pudding"). The village is listed as one of the top 100 best places to live in America according to Money Magazine's 2006 rankings.
