About New York City

New York is also home to the largest number of Fortune 500 companies in the United States, including 15 in Manhattan.The city was one of several colonial settlements established by European colonists on the north east coast of North America as part of New Netherland, with its core being New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. The area was first explored by Henry Hudson while looking for a western passage to Asia; he claimed it for Holland and named it "New Amsterdam". In 1664, England seized control and renamed it "New York" after King Charles II (who had recently ascended from his throne). It became a territory that included much or all present-day New Jersey and Connecticut but ended at what is now Albany County.
