About Montauk

Montauk derives its name from the Montauks, a Native American tribe that lived in the area. They were driven out by settlers in 1655. The first European settler was William Hallett, from Nantucket, Massachusetts (who named it "Hallett's Cove"). Many of New York City's wealthiest families built large summer homes on the eastern end of Long Island during the latter half of the 19th century and would commute to work via ferry boats or private rail cars; some still do today. The LIRR added a spur to East Hampton in 1882 which was later used for freight service only and removed entirely around 1920 due to lack of use; this line is now used as part-of-the-way for bicycle races such as Tour de Trump and has been converted into an exclusive pedestrian walkway called "The LIRR Bike Path".
