The City of Ithaca is located at 42°6'43" North, 76°32'47" West (42.111667, −76.548056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land with no water areas within city limits. The maximum elevation is about above sea level on Cascadilla Hill in the northeast corner of Tompkins County; however, much or most of this hill lies within neighboring Cortland County and is not part of Ithaca proper. Ithaca's neighborhoods are commonly thought to be separated into four sections: Downtown/Commons (the area around downtown), East Hill (east-central), Collegetown (west-central) and West End/Southside(southwestern). In fact there are several smaller neighborhood divisions that exist within these regions: Upper East Side / Southwest Side; Northeast Heights / Southeast heights; Ivy Lane Neighborhoods A & B / South Cayuga Neighborhoods A & B etc.
