About City of Albany

Albany is one of the oldest surviving European settlements from the original thirteen colonies, and was named for the Duke of Albany, who became James II in England. The first Europeans to arrive were French colonists and Jesuit missionaries who arrived southward from settlements at Montreal for trade and proselytizing. In 1624, they built a mission called Sainte Marie among the Iroquois; it was located in what is now known as Maplewood (formerly Rutger Park), about six miles (10 km) west of present-day Albany. This made it a prime location for trading with Native Americans coming up from New York City during their annual "migration" to Canada; this practice continued until after 1760 when most native peoples had been forced off their lands by expanding European settlement into central and western New York State following its seizure by Britain after defeat of France in 1763 during Seven Years' War.In 1664, English colonial officials granted a charter through King Charles II giving his Governor Thomas Dongan permission to survey Fort Orange along with other villages on "the Great River.
