About Sparta

Sparta Township was named for the ancient Greek city-state of Sparta, in honor of the Revolutionary War hero General Philip Schuyler.The township is part of the New York metropolitan area and is home to a large number of commuters who work in New York City or other nearby communities. It has a high percentage (more than 20%)of residents who commute outbound to jobs daily, which makes it one of Sussex County's highest employment centers outside agriculture and tourism. The Census Bureau's 2006-2010 American Community Survey showed that (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) median household income was $82,946 (with a margin of error of +/- $3,876) and the median family income was $99,788 (+/- $4,567).
