In 1989, the village was once again renamed "the Township of South Orange Village".South Orange is home to the oldest volunteer fire company in New Jersey, Hook & Ladder Company #1. The company was organized on December 21, 1855 and continues today with an all-volunteer force of over 50 members.The first African American member of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Joseph Alexander Jr., a resident who served as a USMC drill instructor during World War I at Parris Island South Carolina and later became one of only two black Marines to reach the rank General Officer; he retired from service in 1962 as Commandant Of The Marine Corps after serving for 36 years.Alexander's son Dr James E West III also lived here until his death on October 25th 2015 at age 78..
