About Somers Point

It is part of the Ocean City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Somers Point was settled in 1693 by English colonists as a port town, and named for Thomas Somers, an official with the West Jersey colony. The city's waterfront has been home to commercial fishing boats since 1854 when it became one of New Jersey's first commercial ports. In 1902 it was incorporated as a city and its population grew from 2,500 in 1920 to over 10,000 by 1960 due largely to tourism on Brigantine Island which is connected via bridge at that time (the island now has no bridge access). Tourism declined after World War II but re-emerged during the 1980s with many new vacation homes being built along its coast line; today there are about 5300 year-round residents living within city limits while another 15000 live nearby or across Great Egg Harbor Bay on Long Beach Island (LBI), making Somers Point/Long Beach Township one of New Jersey's largest resort destinations.
