The borough was named for the town of Metz in France, the native home of a large share of early residents. Metuchen is a suburban community located on the eastern border and adjacent to Edison Township. It is situated about 20 miles (32 km) southwest from New York City and approximately 12 miles (19 km) northeast from Trenton, capital city of New Jersey. The area known as Metuchen was originally called "Raritan Landing" or "Raritan Ferry." In 1714 it became known as Woodbridge Township because it had been part of Elizabethtown before that town's incorporation in 1748; however, there were no settlers at that time until after 1680 when John Pintard sold his holdings to Richard Stoutenburg who built his house near where Raritan Landing Road crosses over into what would become Somerville Borough today on land purchased by him around 1690-1700 which he called 'The Flats'.
