About Fanwood

Fanwood was formed during the "Boroughitis" phenomenon then sweeping through New Jersey, in which 26 boroughs were formed in Union County alone in 1894 alone. Fanwood's referendum passed on July 31, 1895, and it became an independent municipality on October 2. The borough is said to have been named for Fannie Wood (1844–1930), a popular author of children's books who lived at her estate called "Fanwood Hall" from 1876 until her death. She died just days before the vote took place and never knew that she had lent her name to the new town; however some sources indicate that she did know about it but chose not to reveal this information publicly due to modesty or because of concerns over how people would react if they knew she was considering moving away from Scotch Plains where most of her friends lived at the time.
