Fairfield is home to the South Mountain Reservation, a county park that covers 1,935 acres (7.8 km2) and includes trails for hiking and horseback riding. The township's largest single landowner is still Essex County College which owns over 2,000 acres (810 ha), including most of the land at South Mountain Reservation. Fairfield also has large tracts of undeveloped woodland within its borders including portions of both Bearfort Ridge Natural Area Preserve and Wyanokie Wilderness in neighboring Ringwood State Park as well as several smaller nature preserves such as White Oak Woods on Rt 23 near Caldwell Borough Hall; this area was once part of an extensive tract owned by John Stevens who purchased it from his father Robert who had emigrated from England in 1682 with his wife Mary Tindell when he was only 15 years old; they settled first in New York City where their son Robert Jr.
