In 1875, the city of Bridgewater was created from portions of the township. The remaining portions of Bridgewater Township were transferred to Raritan Township in 1927. Portions of territory were ceded to Easton (April 1, 1928) and Bound Brook (February 23, 1930). The township was named for John Bridgeman Jr., a royal governor who signed New Jersey's first constitution into law in 1776.Bridgewater is home to numerous corporations including: Becton Dickinson & Company; CarePoint Health; Johnson & Johnson Family Of Companies which includes Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc.; Novo Nordisk A/S; BASF Corporation North American Headquarters and Manufacturing Facility for Agricultural Products Division as well as their Performance Materials segment headquarters located on Route 22 West near I-287 Exit 5A at Somerville Circle with additional manufacturing facilities located on Route 202 Business near U.S. Highway 206 Exit 8A at Somerset Corporate Center South along with other facilities throughout Somerset County including Branchburg Twp., Franklin Twp., Hillsborough Twp., Montgomery Twp..
