The town is home to the Merrimack Valley YMCA and the New Hampshire Special Olympics. The headquarters of CVS Caremark, a pharmacy services company, is located in South Merrimack. The town was first settled by Europeans around 1640 as part of Salisbury (now known as Salisbury Mills). It was officially incorporated on February 22, 1746 by Governor Benning Wentworth along with Hampton and Londonderry; it would be named after the river that runs through it: "Merrimac River", which means "quick water" or "swift stream". In 1823-1824 there were several attempts to separate from Londonderry but they failed until January 1st 1827 when South Merrimack became an independent entity for about two years before being reunited with Londontowne again on March 7th 1830.
