About Dover

The city is named after Dover, England. Dover was originally called "Northam" and was settled in 1623 by Thomas Davis. It became the county seat of Strafford County upon its creation from York County in 1769. The community was set off from Portsmouth (then called Strawbery Banke) when it became the shire town (county seat) for newly created Strafford County, which separated from York on October 31, 1771; however, Northam did not become a separate incorporated town until 1836.[6] In 1874 it annexed land that had been part of Rollinsford.[7] The name "Dover" came into use during the 19th century because travelers going to New Hampshire's seacoast used this route through Dover and over Great Bay to avoid tolls on roads using bridges across Piscataqua River at Kittery or Portsmouth.
