The town is home to the state's only maximum security prison, Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility. The primary settlement in town, where over 80% of the population resides, is defined as the Danbury census-designated place (CDP) and is located at . The CDP occupies a central portion of the town along both sides of U.S. Route 3 with most businesses centered on that road between its junctions with New Hampshire Routes 25A and 119B. The northern part of this area extends into neighboring Wilmot Township while other portions extend south into adjacent townships within Merrimack County: to Alton Bay in Alton and Northfield; to Penacook in Penacook; and to Bow on Lake Winnipesaukee's southern shoreline near Wolfeboro Bay State Park at Meredith Neck Road/New Hampshire Route 11B).
