About Sparks

The first people to settle in what is now Sparks were John Crum and his family, who emigrated from the U.S. state of Arkansas in 1864 after Crum's wife died during childbirth along with their child. The next year, he started a ferry service across the Truckee River that evolved into a settlement called "Crumville". In 1868, he built a log toll bridge across the river where Reno Avenue now crosses (the original structure was destroyed by high water). He later sold his holdings and moved to nearby Virginia City; however, he retained ownership of an island on Pyramid Lake near Sparks where some members of his extended family lived for many years under various ownerships until it was acquired by William Bowers Bourn II as part of Rancho San Pablo around 1900 (Bourn also bought much land north and south along Washoe Valley).
