The Great Falls of the Potomac River are located on the upper reaches of that river in northern Virginia and southern Maryland, where it flows through a series of canyons and rapids. The falls themselves are about 7 miles (11 km) from its mouth at Washington, D.C., but because most water is diverted for use by people farther upstream before it reaches there, they have been greatly diminished in recent decades. They were once a major tourist attraction; George Washington visited them several times during his presidency to go fishing or enjoy picnics with friends nearby. Today they are protected as part of Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park along with several adjacent historical sites including Great Falls Tavern where visitors can see exhibits related to canal history. Great Salt Lake is an endorheic lake located in Utah near Salt Lake City which borders Idaho on the east and Nevada on the west.
