Silver Bow County was created on February 22, 1864 by the Territorial Legislature. It was named for nearby deposits of silver ore. The county seat is Butte, which has been its only city since it became a consolidated municipality in 1977 with the town of Silver Bow (incorporated in 1893). In addition to Butte and Walkerville, there are several other communities within Silver Bow County: Anaconda (incorporated 1901), Deer Lodge (1865), Wise River Valley and Granite Peak Ski Area.
