Liberty was platted in 1833. The community was named for the American concept of liberty. A post office called Liberty has been in operation since 1835. The Liberty Memorial Bridge, a major Kansas City landmark, crosses the Missouri River at Liberty and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It is also known as "Old MO-KAN" bridge (the name given to it by locals), or colloquially as "Big Red".
