Hattiesburg is also home to the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science (MSMS), a state-funded residential high school for gifted students. The school, which opened in fall 2002, is located at the University of Southern Mississippi campus. The city has a strong mayor-council government with 11 council members elected from single member districts and an elected mayor who presides over all departments. City officials include: Mayor Johnny DuPree; Chief Administrative Officer – John Witherspoon; Director of Finance – David Shawver; Director of Human Resources - Tammy Jones; Municipal Court Clerk – Mary Liddell Smith and City Attorney - Jimmie Hadden Jr.. The current acting Police Chief is Anthony Parker Jr., replacing former chief Amos Patton on December 8, 2014 after being suspended from his duties without pay due to allegations that he ordered police officers under his command to falsify time sheets while serving as interim chief following the retirement of previous Police Chief Frankie Dickson in June 2014.
