About Greenville

Greenville is the principal city of the Greenville Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Washington and Sharkey counties. It is also part of the larger Jackson–Yazoo City Combined Statistical Area with a total population in 2010 estimated at 166,732. The Greenwood Commonwealth was an African-American newspaper published from 1892 to 1954 by Isaiah T. Montgomery in his hometown of Mound Bayou, Mississippi (now called Mound City). The paper was founded as a weekly but became biweekly after two years; it later switched to monthly publication before ceasing publication altogether in 1954 due to financial difficulties caused by Montgomery's death that year and lack of support for its mission among local blacks who were moving away from agriculture into industry or other professions that did not require subscriptions or advertising revenue for survival.
