It is named in honor of the seventh President of the United States, James Madison. Clinton was founded by European Americans in 1816 as a settlement along the Natchez Trace. The city's growth began when it became a stop on the Mississippi Central Railroad line from New Orleans to Nashville, Tennessee. Clinton has been designated as an official Main Street City and is home to one of two campuses for Hinds Community College (the other being at Raymond). It also hosts part of NASA's John C Stennis Space Center with its large rocket testing facility located just outside town limits off U.S Highway 49W/US Highway 98W/Mississippi State Route 302E near Interstate 20 exit #62A-B; this area contains more than 1 million acres (4,000 km2) used for rocket testing and space exploration research.
