According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land. South St. Paul is located on Minnesota State Highway 149 and Minnesota State Highway 3; and is also served by County Roads 24, 28, 29, 30 (which runs through downtown), 31 and 32. The South St. Paul Municipal Airport serves general aviation traffic for the community with no commercial flights available at this time . South St. Paul lies in an area known as Frogtown because frogs were so plentiful there when settlers first arrived that they could be used as stepping stones across local creeks during springtime thaws or rainstorms—a practice which continued into modern times until pollution killed off most frog populations in southern Dakota County around 1970-1980s (frogs are now making a comeback).
