Shakopee has been designated a Tree City USA for 31 years by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to community forest. Shakopee is named after Chief Shakopee of the Mdewakanton Dakota, who lived in this area. The name means "little gray-haired one". It was also called "Little Crow" or Mahkahpa before being renamed in 1857 when it became the county seat and because there were several other places named Shakopee at that time. The city's original name was Little Crow, but it had already been given to another place nearby on lower Minnesota River; therefore, they changed its name to avoid confusion with that location (which later took on a different spelling).
