About Sandstone

The city of Sandstone was founded in 1891. It was named for the sandstone cliffs along the Kettle River, which were used to build many of its first buildings. The town's post office opened on September 1, 1892; and a school district formed in 1893. A flour mill and a creamery were built by 1895, with an estimated population of 300 people that year. In 1899 two railroads reached Sandstone: the Minneapolis & St Louis Railway (later part of Soo Line) from Staples to Pine City; and Great Northern Railway from Duluth through Cloquet to Grand Rapids via Carlton (the "Cloquet Cutoff"). By 1900 there were three general stores, two hotels/boarding houses, four saloons/gambling halls plus other businesses including blacksmiths shops as well as lumber mills producing pine shingles for export around the world.. In 1901 construction began on what would become one of Minnesota's largest hydroelectric plants at nearby Banning State Park damming up both sides fo Kettle River creating Lake Vermilion .
