Ortonville was named for William Orton, a railroad official. The town site was platted in 1879 by the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway Company as part of its extension from Glenwood to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The city is located on U.S Highway 75 (MN 75), which runs north-south through the city; it also has an interchange with Interstate 90 (I-90).
