About Duluth

The city is named for Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, the first known European explorer of the area. The Anishinaabe (Ojibwe or Chippewa) were the historical inhabitants of Duluth. The Anishinaabe are first mentioned in French records, which suggest that they had previously been living along Lake Huron and moved to "Lac Superieur" after suffering from a great famine around 1615. In 1822 Zebulon Pike negotiated a treaty with Chief Kookooska of the Pillager Band to allow American settlement on their land at present-day Superior; however this was not ratified by Congress until 1837 due to concerns about violating British treaties with First Nations north of Lakes Huron and Erie. In 1848–49 there was an epidemic among Native Americans who had little resistance against new infectious diseases brought by Europeans from across wide oceans; it killed more than half their population because they lacked immunity against these foreign diseases: smallpox, measles and influenza (the last being especially deadly).
