History [ edit ] Cloquet was named for a French-Canadian fur trader, Jean-Baptiste Cloquet (1789–1855), who established a trading post in the area. The city was platted as "Cloquet" in 1892.[6] A post office has been in operation at Cloquet since 1893.[7] The city took its name from nearby Lake Kabetogama, which itself is derived from the Ojibwe language word gaa-biizhigamaa meaning "where one hears something cracking or popping."[8][9] In 1895, it became county seat of Carlton County. It incorporated as a village on April 1, 1898,[10][11] and then later as a city on December 31, 1960.[12][13]. On July 1st 2018 the City of Cloquet merged with neighboring town Nisswa to form Northland Township[14]. This merger will take place over time and will be completed by 2021 according to state law.
