The township is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is located about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of downtown Detroit. Waterford Township was established in 1823, when it was detached from Pontiac Township. It has grown to become Oakland County's second largest municipality with a population approaching 70,000 residents. The city hall for Waterford Township is located at 27777 Civic Center Drive on the corner of Civic Center Drive and Pontiac Trail near where they intersect with Orchard Lake Road just north of Orchard Lake Village limits in Commerce Charter Township across from Waterford Oaks Golf Course which opened in 1973 as one of two courses owned by General Motors founder Billy Durant until his death that same year after he lost control over GM stock during the Great Depression years leading up to World War II; along with nearby Crystal Downs Golf Course which opened three years later also designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr.
