Novi is a planned community. It was founded in the mid-1950s by George N. Gillett, Jr., an heir to the Gillette Company fortune and president of Novi's first bank, as well as other local investors who wanted to create a new city on what was then farm land north of Detroit. The name "Novi" comes from Latin for "new". The city incorporated in 1955 with only 1,600 residents; it has grown rapidly since then due to its proximity to Metro Detroit and major highways such as I-96 (Michigan) and M-5 (Michigan). In 2015 CNN Money ranked Novi #17 on their list of 100 Best Places To Live In The United States because of its good schools, low crime rate and abundance of jobs.
