New Baltimore was founded in 1835 by John W. Hunt, who purchased land from the US government and named it "Hunt's Reserve." The name was changed to New Baltimore in 1836 when a post office opened. It incorporated as a village on April 3, 1950 and became a city on January 1, 1990. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of , all land. The main part of town is located between M-29 (Van Dyke) and M-53 (Groesbeck Highway).
