The city is considered a "small-town" due to its relatively small population, but Midland has some large companies. The city is home to the Midland Motor Company, founded in 1903 by Alexander Y. Malcomson and Frank H. Wheeler as the first dedicated automobile manufacturer in Michigan, and now owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles through its subsidiary FCA US LLC (formerly Chrysler Group). It also hosts facilities for Dow Chemical Company; SABIC Innovative Plastics; BorgWarner Turbo Systems; Lear Corporation automotive seating operations (Lear Seating); E&B Natural Resources Management Corp.; Great Lakes Gelatin Co., Inc.; and American Vanguard Corporation/American Vanguard Agricultural Division's headquarters are located here as well as offices of DTE Energy Co., First Merit Bank, Huntington Bank N.A., PNC Financial Services Group Incorporated ,and Charter Communications . Other major employers include General Motors Components Holdings (formerly Delphi), Guardian Industries Corp.
