The area was originally inhabited by Anishnaabe Native Americans. The first white settlers in the area were missionaries and traders that arrived in the 1830s. In 1855, Captain Percival Perry arrived with his family, then founded a trading post named "Perry's Landing". That community grew to become today's city of Bay City, which was incorporated as a village in 1857 and as a city in 1865.
