Marblehead is one of five towns mentioned in the song "Sixteen Miles on the Erie Canal" as being on the canal which runs from Buffalo to Albany. The others are: Tonawanda, Lockport and Medina (all New York) and Albion (Pennsylvania). The town of Marblehead was settled by Europeans in 1629 with a grant from James I to John Winthrop, Jr., who arrived at Salem Harbor aboard his ship Abigail with 30 Puritan settlers. He was given 600 acres (2.4 km2) for a "plantation" at what is now called Marbledale, across the harbor from Salem; he also built a house there for himself near Fort Hill Park where he lived until his death in 1676/77.
