The city is named for the town of Framingham, in England. The population was 68,318 as of 2017. An area of 28 square miles (73 km2), making it the second-largest municipality in Massachusetts and one of the largest suburbs on Boston's western border with New Hampshire. Framingham has an elected mayor and a nine-member city council that acts as both a City Council and Board Of Selectmen; each member serves two year terms which are staggered so that only half are up for election every odd numbered year (i.e., 2015, 2017). In addition to its own police department, Framingham also shares an Animal Control Officer with Sherborn under contract from MetroWest Regional Transit Authority since 2013.[1] Fire services have been provided by contract to MetroWest Medical Center since 2016 after years without any fire service following budget cuts.[2] The current Chief is Robert Ciccolo who succeeded David Aherns upon his retirement on January 1st 2018[3].
