About Framingham

Framingham, sited on the ancient trail known as the Old Connecticut Path, was first settled by Europeans in 1640. The city received its name from settlers who had traveled to Massachusetts along the Charles River and settled in an area framed by a large boulder (or "frame") at a shallow portion of that river's path. In 1660, William Pynchon purchased land near Framingham Center where he built a house and laid out gardens; it would be incorporated as part of Springfield seven years later. In 1798, Thomas Perkins built his estate on what is now Framinghan Avenue; this became one of Boston's most prominent roadways until it was relocated underground with other historic roads during construction for Route 128 in 1958.[6] In 1854,[7] residents from neighboring towns gathered to form Union Village which subsequently changed its name into South Framingham when it merged with nearby villages including North Framingham and West Newton.
