The city is served by the Takoma Park Police Department and volunteer fire department, and is home to the regional office of the Maryland-National Capital Park Police. The police department was founded in 1893. In 1968, two officers were shot there; one officer was killed. The shooter, James Earl Greenleaf Jr., a resident of Hyattsville who had been fired from his job at Western Union earlier that day for stealing money orders, then took his own life with a bullet through his head after being cornered by police on Carroll Avenue near Piney Branch Road (Maryland Route 410). Takoma/Langley Crossroads Historic District is a national historic district located at Silver Spring Township in Montgomery County and Takoma Park in Prince George's County , Maryland . It consists of 658 contributing buildings built between 1875 and 1940 .
