The United States Naval Institute, a private nonpartisan organization dedicated to the global maritime community, is also based here. Annapolis is home to several recreational boats that have set transatlantic records: the sailboat "Alfa Romeo II" (1999), and the powerboats "Spirit of Australia I" (2001) and "Spirit of Canada I" (2002). The city limits also extend westward into Howard County, with 11 communities there officially considered part of Annapolis. The name for Annapolis comes from its original location along a deep harbor on an estuary leading toward Chesapeake Bay; in 1694 two English ships sailed into this harbor and named it after Anne or Annes Towne in Somerset.
