According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The town's geography includes oceanfront on both sides, with Cape Porpoise on its eastern side and Goose Rocks Beach (formerly known as Cuckolds) at its western end. The latter beach was named for "Cuckolds' Island", an island in Casco Bay that was said to have been used by fishermen as a place for their wives while they were away at sea; it no longer exists due to coastal erosion. There are several islands off Kennebunkport's coast: Little Diamond Island (the largest), Cliff Island, Great Diamond Island (also called Long Sands), White Islands, Swans Islands and Burnt Coat Harbor Islands 1-3 & 5-7).
