It is derived from the Abenaki word damariscotta, meaning "river of little fish". The town was incorporated in 1789. The Damariscotta River flows into the Atlantic Ocean at this point. It is a popular tourist destination for its scenery and water activities, including boating and fishing. During colonial times it was an important shipbuilding center; during World War II it became a major site for building Liberty ships (see below).
