It is the principal city of and is included in the Minden Micropolitan Statistical Area. Minden was founded as a town in 1836 by Dr. John Sappington, who named it after his hometown of Minden, Germany (the name means "peace" or "sanctuary"). The present-day parish seat of Webster Parish was formerly part of Claiborne Parish until 1871. In that year, its northern portion became Bienville Parish; five years later this area became part of Webster Parish when Louisiana's parishes were reorganized into their current configuration during Reconstruction from federal occupation at the end of the American Civil War.
