Harahan was named after Patrick H. Harahan, a New Orleans lawyer who served as Jefferson Parish president from 1960 to 1980. The town of Harahan is located on the former site of the historic community of Mechanicsburg, which was founded in 1854 by German immigrants and destroyed by flooding from Hurricane Betsy in 1965. History [ edit ] Mechanicsburg began as a settlement for workers at nearby plantations along Bayou St. John during the 1850s and 1860s. It had its own post office (ZIP code 70123) with ZIP code prefix "700" until it closed on October 31, 2007; postal operations were then transferred to the Metairie branch office (ZIP code 70005).
