Pikeville is the principal city of the Pikeville, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Pike County. The population was estimated to be 12,846 in 2014. The area that would become known as "Pikeville" was first settled by James and John Hargis in 1790 on a tract of land they purchased from George Muse (also spelled "Muse"). They built their cabin near what is now downtown's Spring Street. In 1793 another settler named Samuel Biggs joined them and together they erected cabins at what later became Main Street and Fifth Avenue (later renamed Central Avenue). This settlement became known as Hargis' Settlement or simply Old Town; it included about 20 families who were mostly subsistence farmers with some hunting for game to supplement their diets.
